Fairfax County (VA) Fire & Rescue Department (FCFRD) is a combination department consisting of 2,000 members. For the 2024 Safety Stand Down, FCFRD suspended all non-emergency activities to focus on safety and health training and education.
Each day of Safety Stand Down, the department offered training for a specific focus area relating to fire and EMS operational basics. The training was supplemented by group physical fitness videos, cooking tutorials, grocery shopping list templates, and hands-on practical skills sheets. FCFRD even created a web site for members to find more details about the focus areas and access additional resources.
Posters were hung in each station to help members stay informed about what each day’s theme would be. View FCFRD’s posters for Day 1, Day 2, Day 4, and Day 5.
The department also offered an incentive for members to participate. Personnel who completed each day’s training were eligible to receive continuing education units from the Virginia Department of Emergency Medical Services.
